What a club sticker order usually looks like

A club organiser usually arrives with two things settled: the drawing, and a rough count of how many members are going to want one. Everything after that is our side of the job. The order is almost always a single design in a single size, meant for laptop lids and water bottles, handed out at a meeting or left in a stack on a table for people to take as they pass. That is a straightforward thing to price and a straightforward thing to cut, and it is the shape of most club orders we set up for Garden City South.

One design, one size, one quantity. That is the default, and it is the default for a reason. A club is not running a shop. It wants the same mark on every laptop in the room, so the members recognise each other's kit without anyone having to explain it. Two sizes only enter the picture when the group has decided a laptop sticker and a bottle sticker should genuinely differ, and even then most organisers settle on one middle size rather than splitting the order.

Die cut means the cut follows the outline of the artwork instead of leaving a rectangle around it. A shield, a paw, a lettermark, a mascot: the sticker ends up the shape of the thing rather than a card with the thing sitting on it. For club artwork, usually a single strong silhouette, that is the whole point.

West Hempstead and Franklin Square, both exactly 1.2 miles out

There is a quirk here worth knowing about. Two of the places nearest to you sit at the same distance. West Hempstead is 1.2 miles away. Franklin Square is 1.2 miles away. Not roughly the same, the same. Garden City is 1.7 miles out, and New Hyde Park is 2.1.

Clubs draw members from across that whole cluster, which means the person who commissions the stickers and the people who end up with them are frequently not in the same place. We cover all of it from one counter at one rate, so it makes no difference to the price whether half your membership is on one side of that 1.2 mile line or the other. Put the order in under one name, one design, one count.

How the per square inch rate works

Die cut stickers here are priced by area, and the rate per square inch drops as the quantity climbs. The bands are: 35 cents at 1 to 24 pieces, 30 cents at 25 to 49, 28 cents at 50 to 99, 26 cents at 100 to 249, 24 cents at 250 to 499, and 22 cents at 500.

Work a real example. A 3 by 3 inch sticker is 9 square inches. Order 40 of them and you are in the 25 to 49 band, so the rate is 30 cents: $2.70 per sticker, $108.00 for the 40.

Now the part that matters to a committee counting heads. Take that same 3 by 3 inch sticker to 50 pieces and you cross into the next band. The rate becomes 28 cents, the sticker becomes $2.52, and 50 of them come to $126.00. You have ten more stickers than you asked for and a lower price on every one. If your headcount lands near the top of a band, check the next band up before you commit.

Sizing for a laptop lid and a bottle

Because the price is driven by area, size is the lever you actually control. A laptop lid will carry more than most organisers expect. A bottle carries less, because the surface curves away under the artwork and a wide sticker has to bend across that curve. If one size has to serve both, size for the bottle and let it sit comfortably small on the laptop rather than the reverse. Tell us the dimension you want and we will hold the artwork to it.

Sending us the artwork

Send the highest resolution version of the design the club has, not a copy pulled off a group chat. If somebody in the club drew it, ask them for the original. The outline we cut is derived from the artwork itself, so a clean edge in the file is a clean edge on the sticker, and a fuzzy one has to be interpreted.

If the only version you have sits on a background, say so, and tell us where you want the cut to fall. On a mascot, the cut can hug the mascot or it can follow a plain border set out around it. Both are die cuts. They just look different on a lid.

We print and cut everything at 205 East Main Street in Huntington, and Garden City South sits 18.1 miles south west of that counter, straight line. You can collect from the shop at no charge, or have the order sent to a street address.

Four people who tend to place this order

The organiser. You have a headcount, a design somebody already made, and a budget the committee agreed on. Start from the headcount, find the band it falls in, then check whether the next band up costs less per piece for more stickers.

The member who drew it. You care about the outline more than the price. Send the original file and tell us where the cut should fall. If the artwork has fine points or thin arms, mention them so they are not treated as noise.

The treasurer. You want one figure, not a range. Give us the size and the quantity and the arithmetic above is the whole of it: square inches multiplied by the rate for that band, multiplied by the count.

The person on the sign up table. You are handing these out, so you want a size people will actually put on a laptop in front of other people. Err smaller than the committee's first instinct.
